About William Friskey

William Friskey is a graduate of Western Connecticut State University's MFA program in creative and professional writing. He is currently seeking representation for his first novel, Scout's Honor, and his second novel, The House on Bittersweet Trail, his thesis for his MFA program. William also teaches American literature, creative writing, fiction, poetry, and journalism in Southeastern Connecticut where he lives with his wife and two children.

The House on Bittersweet Trail (Currently seeking representation) 10-page sample

Seventeen-year-old, sex-obsessed Allan sits in the back of his math class erasing himself—literally. As the rubber end of the pencil burns through his flesh, his classmates react with terror. A subsequent trip to Lacy, the school psychologist, starts Allan’s difficult journey down the road to recovery, a trail he hasn’t been able to navigate alone. Meanwhile, an incestuous relationship with his twin sister Ann, complicated by a budding relationship with cute Goth girl Charlie, adds to the chaos in Allan’s life. All the while, memories of the abuses suffered at the hands of his father, now out of the picture, cloud his reality and threaten his relationships. But when the twins’ mother is arrested, forcing them to take refuge with Charlie and her grandmother Lola in the house on Bittersweet Trail, Allan must decide between his forbidden love for Ann and a more socially acceptable relationship with Charlie. As the decision weighs on him, and his incestuous secret is revealed, he is forced to confront his biggest demon of all—his estranged father. (65,000 words)

This is our dilemma as we follow Truman on a turbulent journey through girls, drug dealers, felonies, girls, despair, guilt, girls, and the confusion that is coming of age in modern America. Did I mention girls? New York City serves as the backdrop as Truman comes to terms with a mysteriously troubled past while trying to survive his menacing present. (72,000 words)
